The term modern rock was initially used to distinguish the classic rock which was played from 1960’s-mid 1980’s from the rock played in 1990’s onwards.

For some modern rock is just a genre of alternative rock since they have little difference in the playing tune and mostly because they were popularized almost in the same era. Since alternative rock was an underground, indie type type of genre modern rock was the mainstream music on the radios and still is the most dominant genre in the market.
